By this point we have all heard different bits and pieces about how getting at least a certain amount of sunlight directly on your skin can be good for you. There are many making claims to this effect, but what I have gathered is it is actually best to get your necessary dose of vitamin D in other ways. Skip the lounging unprotected for fifteen minutes on your outdoor lounge chair. Instead you want to relax on that outdoor furniture with some sunscreen.
I have read many articles, and listened to several people in the know discuss this matter, and the conclusion that I have reached is the following. While it is correct that vitamin D is a nutrient that is essential for metabolizing calcium, and this is something a great many people are short on, it should be obtained carefully. The act of taking in the sun without any filter at all can have irreversible repercussions that are best avoided to begin with. Since vitamin D can be obtained in other ways, that are void of these risks, making use of them seems to be the most prudent course of action by far.
By spending fifteen minutes without any sunscreen the exposure of your skin to ultraviolet rays can cause photo damage and this in turn can lead to much more significant problems. In fact, the photo damage may result in premature aging, brown sports, dilated capillaries and ultimately skin cancer.
But of course being in the sun is not all about doom and gloom. No indeedy, instead it is about being careful when you are spending time in the sun. This means that instead of spending those fifteen minutes without sunscreen you instead put on SPF 30 and get to enjoy being out of doors for multiple hours. Please be cognizant that you should be reapplying the sunscreen every couple of hours.
Now, as for getting the requirements of vitamin D, look to get your fill with orange juice that is fortified, dairy products, multivitamins and calcium supplements. This will allow you to get what you need and eliminate the downside of full on sun exposure. It just makes good sense if you ask me.
When you do go out to enjoy a wonderful meal cooked up on gas barbecues do so sensibly even if it is outside of the sun’s strongest hours. For it takes relatively little effort to wipe or spray on some sunscreen, and repeat as is instructed by the manufacturer. Then you can let your family and guests relax as you cook up a feast on the barbeque. Oh, and share that high SPF sunscreen with the whole crew and then each of you can really relax.
