Sometimes I think back to before recycling and green living was a part of our everyday life. That time in our lives where we threw everything in one bin, and off it went to some unknown place. I for one didn’t think about where it went, or what my lack of education regarding that fact might be doing to the environment. Of course, I’m not beating myself up over it since I was under ten years of age. Actually, truth be know, when I have those reflective moments I am thinking about that phrase, “ignorance is bliss”. Now, I by no means am insinuating that we were better being clueless, just that certain choices were easier when we were uninformed.

Alas, easy does not translate into best, and so we push forward in our personal worlds to learn how to do the right thing. It is after all called being conscious, or socially aware. I bring all of this up, because a friend inquired what’s the best type of bathroom, or kitchen cabinet to get if you are being eco-friendly. She was surprised when I started to give her the list of things to look for, as I imagine she thought I would just mention a specific brand, or distributer.

Nowadays, if you are committed to green living and are installing cabinets you need to know the following information. First off, if wood is what you are after then you will want to know that it was responsibly harvested. This means it was cultivated from forests where trees will be replanted, and preferably are a sort that grow rapidly. In addition, you should confirm that there was no formaldehyde used in the construction of the cabinets.

If you are open to wood like surfaces, then wheat board is an excellent selection. As the name implies it is made partially of wheat, something very renewable, and readily available. Lots of people don’t know that this even exists, and there is actually a strong chance that the person showing you your cabinet options may have to inquire as to what, if any of their inventory has this base. There are other similar materials out there, but you will have to do a little research for those, as new stuff is coming out all the time.

Finally, and this is something often overlooked, find out what the cabinets were finished with, as you want them to be non-toxic chemicals. Request either water-based or low Voc finishes.

As you do your best to eat well, and be smart in your role as steward to this planet you can pat yourself on the back for your efforts. But, if perhaps you are eager to take things a bit farther then here a few ideas on how to green your kitchen. Even if you don’t follow up on these right away, file them for the next move you make, or update you make to your home.

First off, the convection oven is definitely an improvement over other ovens. It continuously circulates the hot air, which reduces the amount of time necessary to cook an item. Thus, studies show it uses and average of twenty percent less energy than the conventional ones.

If you are using a fridge that is from before 1993, then you are going to hae a pleasant surprise awaiting you when you get a new one. It will use considerably less electricity, and that’s great news considering the fridge is the appliance that uses the most of that.

By moving away from those energy hog appliances you will be doing a great service to your pocket book and the world at large.

With the bed being the focal point in a bedroom, you will want to make it look its very best. Certainly your selection of bed linens, mattress, pillows, blankets, footboards and headboard will all assist to create a delightful appearance. But, those items need a little help from the homeowner to truly shine. Which leads me to this question. Do you know how to make a bed the right way? You know in a manner that is crisp, and tailored. Like when you stay in a fine hotel, and nothing is out of sorts or place, instead all genuinely feels perfect.

Here’s a clue, hospital corners. Yep, if you don’t already know how they are done then surely you have heard reference made to them in books, magazines, films or television. And there is a good reason they are so widely known, they make a bed look spot on. Not only does this process make all look outstanding, in turn such precision makes for a comfortable bed too. The bed frame and box frame can’t do all the work, and once you’ve learned to do hospital corners you will always want to do them, as the results are really that good.

In the past it was hard to get excited over, or even motivated to bring out the wine glasses for sustainable wine. I know I never met anyone who had wine cooler full of the stuff, much less a cellar filled. Yet, it is with much elation that I introduce you to a better batch so to say.

Cleanse your mind and your palate of the taste of those unimpressive eco-wines of a few years ago, and get ready for a real treat. Something that will have you eager to pull out a carafe, or a couple of them along with your best wine glasses. So far my favourite is from the Quintessa Winery, where they produce organic and biodynamic wines. They have done their homework and the result is a very tasty red wine.

Now that you know its good stuff, here’s a little backround to go with that bottle. It is run by a couple and their vineyard is in Napa Valley, good sign already right? Originally they started to grow semi-organically, but switched over to biodynamic farming. It has proven to be a good decision, and we expect to see more great things from them in the future.

An exercise ball is a great, and truly inexpensive addition to a home gym. For years I had to house my gym equipment in closets, and pull everything out each time I wanted to exercise. I am very fortunate to actually have a space completely dedicated to exercise now, but many of the materials I used before the room, I use in the room.

Of these the exercise ball remains a constant. For a long time now patients have been given these as a tool during rehabilitation, and now fitness experts have come to recognize their effectiveness. These balls are great for improving balance, and core strength and as such are not fad items.

There are what appears to be limitless exercise dvds that make use of these balls, and plenty of books that show exercises you can complete with the ball. Some even recommend using it in place of a weights bench if you are only lifting minimal amounts.

But as is the case with most things, all of these balls are not the same, and you should be educated on what to look for prior to buying. You can identify the proper ball for you by sitting on it while it is inflated. Once you are seated look to see if your hips are level with, or slightly above the height of your knees. If so, then it is for you.

If you have more than one person using a bathroom in your house, it is all too easy for their towels to become crisscrossed. Wondering which towel is who’s is always slightly unsettling and inconvenient. Unsettling because nobody wants to choose the wrong one and have the other person think they have been left with the wrong one too, and inconvenient if you find a replacement for ultimately someone will need to wash all those towels.

A quick fix for this is to sew on colourful loops on one edge of each towel. Designate all parties involved a colour, and things are all settled. This will also make hanging the towels from hooks easier, and will confirm that they remain hanging and not in a puddle on the floor. I imagine it goes without saying, but it is preferential that you consider the colour of the towels prior to deciding on the loop colour. This can be an attractive addition, when done with coordination in mind, or an eye sore if you make no effort on this point.

Having your lovely towels hanging in a bathroom is also of a decorating benefit. They will bring in texture, and colour against something otherwise mundane, or monotone as a door, or tile. Thus, even if you do not have an issue with towels becoming confused, these loops are beneficial.

I have fallen madly in love with the Japanese Maple, specifically Acer palmatum ‘Dissectum Atropurpureum’. It was on a trip last autumn to New York that it all evolved. When I happened upon one of these and had the chance to inspect all of its deeply cut redish purple leaves, which look like feathers and seem to shimmy in the right breeze, it honestly took my breath away. I was told that in the upcoming weeks it would be turning a true crimson, and I felt as though I must see it. So I have since been doing a little research on this exquisite specimen, and learned that there are quite a few different Japanese Maples to pick from.

Of those, I am personally partial to the Caperci Dwarf, but it is not in competition with the one I saw in New York because I prefer the exciting red tones and the potential height of eight feet, and width the same. Still, if I were to go with another it would be the Caperci, as it transforms from light pink, to green, and finally to gold. So much colour is impressive in my book and should I choose to invite another into my garden it will be this one. I should note that this one has the potential of growing six feet in height, and can be grown in a container.

If however, I had the space, and wanted a deeper colour it would have to be the Acer palmatum ‘Wolff’, aka Emperor 1. It can grow up to fifteen feet in height, and its foliage becomes a scarlett red.

While I have made my choice, there are several Japanese Maples that are striking, and honestly would be a grand feature in a home’s garden. Check out Villa Taranto, Bloodgood, Sumi Nagashi for starters. I guarantee you will be transfixed too.

Not since my own mother selected wallpaper for the living room of my childhood home have I been anywhere near the stuff. Mistakenly, I have stashed the sticky stuff away in my head under the column of things of the past. My opinion did not cover all dwellings or buildings, just those that are not five star or stately.

Now, I am changing my mind, and not only embracing wallpaper, but using it in some unconventional ways. Surely you have heard the term decoupage, and maybe even dabbled in it. Possibly you have decorative boxes or picture frames this way. Well take it to the next level, attach that paper to the tops of tables, the inside of wardrobes, or wherever else strikes your fancy. If you have remnants of a wallpaper you have used elsewhere, the only work is to cut it to the proper size involved, cover the object of your affection with decoupage glue, affix the paper and cover that with a couple coats of the glue. To limit your chance of accidents, such as water glasses perspiring and pulling up the paper, finish it all off with a shiny spray sealant.

For many of us, exercising regularly and eating in a healthy manner is something we are committed to, or at least have the best of intentions of being committed to. Some days are easier than others, and some weeks can be completely out of whack when it comes to getting either one of those goals done accordingly. The answer that I come across most often to this conundrum is what I refer to as the Treat System. And the treat that I have dangling like a carrot in front of me is a leather bed. Now, I know this is not exactly a common reward, but the one doing the work gets to set the treat, and that’s what I say.

All the top trainers will tell you that setting rewards is a banner way to achieve your goals. Mainly, you need to make it something you really want, and then make it achievable. Lots of people decide to follow a healthy lifestyle in return for things like new clothes, renewed gym memberships, or even holidays. Others opt for jewelry, spa treatments, or meal cheat days. While all of that sounds good to me, none of that is as important, or as feasible in certain cases (ie. Holiday) as getting the bed of my dreams.

One thing I have learned from past treats that I have won is that you must be absolutely clear on what it is that must be accomplished prior to receipt. The agreement with yourself needs to be iron clad, meaning really detailed. This way there is no wiggle room, and when you give yourself the prize you know it was fairly accepted. Otherwise, their can be lapses in your intake, and changes made that stray too far from what your original intent truly was.

To get it right, sit down and map it out. Be reasonable with the time requirements, and results or not only will you not get that new Diane von Furstenberg dress, or holiday to Barcelona, but you may not trust yourself to try again and succeed. This could set you back, and that would be the greatest loss of all. Specifically, do not say something like I will loose thirty pounds in a month by working out and eating well. As you can probably see right away, this is probably doomed. Too vague, no real method behind this plan.

Instead, write something clear and decisive down. I wrote I will workout five days a week for an hour and a half for three months. On Monday, Wednesday, Friday I will do an hour long dvd, followed by running for thirty minutes at 6.0 on the treadmill. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I will do preset workouts on the treadmill for one hour, followed by half hour dvds. My meals eighty percent of the time will follow the instructions of my nutrition plan book, and I can eat as I choose to within reason the remaining twenty. If I should miss any of these schedules I can make them up on the weekend.

My plan is clear, and there is room for some flexibility so that I do not set myself up for defeat. To keep myself motivated, I have been looking at leather beds online in the evenings before climbing into my lackluster bed. I would ask you to wish me luck, but that would be missing the point here, no luck is involved, just concerted effort and good structure.

It seems as though beach styled decorating is everywhere I look. It is front and center on the covers of home magazines, websites, and catalogues, and to be completely frank, I think it is a bit overworked at this juncture. From where I am standing too many rooms are done to a level in which they seem similar to a theater set, or doll house. Too much theme, not enough ingenuity.

Now, that is not to say that there are not some designs that I come across that are inspired, but they seriously stand apart. So, my advice here is that if you are looking to decorate in a beach manner, steer clear of the expected, the overdone, and sniff out some new and exciting ways to create that feel. Translation, reject the blue and white stripes, and opt for seagreen stripes with variations of the same hue. And definitely, even if someone is willing to give them to you for free, keep those nautical tchotchkes to a bare minimum.

Shake of any preconceived images, and make something more uniquely your own. Afterall, you are the one who it will reflect.
