It seems as though beach styled decorating is everywhere I look. It is front and center on the covers of home magazines, websites, and catalogues, and to be completely frank, I think it is a bit overworked at this juncture. From where I am standing too many rooms are done to a level in which they seem similar to a theater set, or doll house. Too much theme, not enough ingenuity.
Now, that is not to say that there are not some designs that I come across that are inspired, but they seriously stand apart. So, my advice here is that if you are looking to decorate in a beach manner, steer clear of the expected, the overdone, and sniff out some new and exciting ways to create that feel. Translation, reject the blue and white stripes, and opt for seagreen stripes with variations of the same hue. And definitely, even if someone is willing to give them to you for free, keep those nautical tchotchkes to a bare minimum.
Shake of any preconceived images, and make something more uniquely your own. Afterall, you are the one who it will reflect.
